Ahrefs vs KWFinder (2026): Pricing, Limits & Keyword Data

A side-by-side comparison of Ahrefs and KWFinder (part of Mangools) for keyword research: plans and prices, usage limits, keyword data, how each calculates keyword difficulty, and the tools around each. All prices and limits come from the vendors' own sites and help pages, checked in October 2026.

Short answer: pick KWFinder if keyword research is most of your SEO work and you want the smaller bill. It comes with every Mangools plan, starting at $61 a month ($37.70 a month billed yearly) for 100 keyword lookups every 24 hours. Pick Ahrefs if you also need backlink research, site audits and competitor gap reports, and can pay $129 a month or more for its Lite plan. Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan, but its limits only suit occasional checks.

Ahrefs vs KWFinder at a Glance

KWFinder is the keyword research tool inside Mangools, a bundle of five SEO apps (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler) plus an AI search tracker. You can’t buy KWFinder on its own; Mangools’ FAQ says it doesn’t sell its tools separately. Ahrefs is a full SEO platform where Keywords Explorer is one tool among many, next to Site Explorer for backlinks and competitor traffic, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and AI visibility tracking.

Figures below are from each vendor’s site as of October 2026.

Ahrefs KWFinder (Mangools)
What you buy Full SEO platform Five SEO tools + AI Search Watcher

The pattern: Mangools gives you more keyword lookups per dollar in a narrower, keyword-focused toolset. Ahrefs gives you a much larger dataset and the link, audit and reporting tools that agencies and in-house teams use alongside keyword research.

Ahrefs vs KWFinder Pricing (October 2026)

Ahrefs prices a platform with tiered limits; Mangools prices one bundle in three tiers. Both discount yearly billing: Ahrefs by up to 17%, Mangools by about 31% to 38% depending on the plan.

Lite gets the core Keywords Explorer. Standard adds the keyword features that matter for planning content at scale: AI keyword suggestions, keyword clusters, search intents and translations, plus Content Explorer and Batch Analysis. History also grows with the plan, from 6 months on Lite to 2 years on Standard and 5 years on Advanced.

Some tools are paid add-ons on top of any plan: Content Kit (AI Content Helper and Grader) from $99/mo, Report Builder at $99/mo, and Brand Radar AI from $199/mo. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts or free trials and generally doesn’t issue refunds; on a monthly plan you can request one only if you haven’t used the service.

Every plan includes all five SEO tools, AI Search Watcher PRO (500 monitored prompts), API and MCP access, and SiteProfiler lookups (20, 70 or 150 per 24 hours). Limits reset every 24 hours rather than monthly. Rank updates are weekly, or daily on Agency. Mangools refunds in full within 48 hours of payment, though not for two consecutive subscriptions.

One thing to check before you budget: Mangools prices can vary by region. The table shows its standard USD list prices, so open the pricing page from your own location to see what you’d pay.

Ahrefs Starter vs Mangools Basic: the cheapest ways in

These are the two cheapest paid ways in.

Ahrefs Starter gives you Keywords Explorer, Site Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker, but with tight limits: 200 credits a month, 250 rows per report, 1 month of history, 5 keyword lists, 50 tracked keywords and no exports. It renews monthly only, and you can’t add users or extra credits.

Mangools Basic costs about twice as much on monthly billing ($61) and about $9 more on yearly billing ($37.70). For that you get 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups every day, 200 tracked keywords, 100,000 backlink rows a month and API access.

If you research keywords more than a few times a week, Basic fits better. Starter suits a site owner who checks a handful of terms now and then and wants a look at Ahrefs’ data.

Usage Limits: Ahrefs Credits vs KWFinder Daily Lookups

This is the difference that most affects day-to-day work, and it’s easy to misread.

Ahrefs counts credits. Per Ahrefs’ help center, opening a report in Keywords Explorer, Site Explorer or another core tool costs 1 credit. Applying filters, changing dates, or opening the SERP viewer or position history costs 1 more each time. Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Brand Radar don’t use credits. Starter gets 200 credits a month and Lite 1,000 per user; Standard and above are unlimited.

KWFinder counts lookups, and the allowance resets every 24 hours: 100 on Basic, 500 on Premium and 1,200 on Agency. Each lookup returns a list of related keyword suggestions plus competitor keywords for the term.

A rough comparison: over 20 working days, Mangools Basic allows up to 2,000 keyword lookups, while Ahrefs Lite’s 1,000 credits cover at most 1,000 report views, and fewer if you filter and drill into each one. It cuts the other way too. Mangools’ allowance doesn’t roll over, so one heavy research day can hit the daily cap even in a quiet month.

Rows matter as well. Ahrefs caps rows per report at 250 on Starter, 2,500 on Lite, 30,000 on Standard and 75,000 on Advanced, so a broad seed keyword shows far more ideas on the higher plans. KWFinder Basic returns up to 200 related keywords per lookup; Premium and Agency raise that limit.

Keyword Data: Database Size, Locations and Search Volume

Ahrefs says Keywords Explorer holds 28.7 billion keywords, filtered from 110 billion discovered, including 2.7 billion for the US, across 217 locations. Mangools says KWFinder draws on 2.5 billion related keywords, checks around 100 million competitor keywords a month, and supports about 65,000 locations.

The location counts aren’t measuring the same thing. Mangools’ figure explicitly includes cities and districts, which makes KWFinder handy for local keyword research, such as a plumber checking demand in one city rather than a whole country.

On metrics, Ahrefs goes further. Besides search volume and difficulty, Keywords Explorer shows:

  • Traffic Potential: an estimate of the traffic you could get by ranking first for the topic, not just for one keyword.
  • Parent Topic: whether a broader page could rank for the term, so you don’t write a separate article for every variation.
  • SERP overview: each top result’s backlinks, traffic and traffic value, plus historical rankings.
  • Clusters and intent: keyword grouping and search intent labels on Standard and up.

KWFinder keeps the view compact: search volume with its history and trend, which helps you spot seasonal terms, keyword difficulty, a SERP overview, and search by domain or URL to see what a competitor ranks for.

Both tools estimate volume. Mangools says it combines multiple data providers with its own processing, and that volume data usually lags about a month. The only first-party data for your own site is Google Search Console, so for keywords you already rank for, compare the tool’s estimate with your actual impressions. Our guide to checking keyword rankings on Google walks through that check.

Keyword Difficulty: How Ahrefs and KWFinder Calculate KD

Both tools score keyword difficulty from 0 to 100, but they measure different things. A KD of 30 in one tool is not a KD of 30 in the other.

Ahrefs KD counts the referring domains linking to the top 10 ranking pages. The scale isn’t linear: Ahrefs maps KD 10 to roughly 10 referring domains, KD 40 to about 56, KD 60 to about 129 and KD 80 to about 353. It ignores on-page factors and estimates your chance of reaching the top 10, not the top 3.

KWFinder KD first scores each page-one result for Link Profile Strength using Moz Domain Authority and Page Authority plus Majestic Citation Flow and Trust Flow, weighting each metric differently. It then gives extra weight to the weaker results, on the logic that a low-authority page on page one signals an opening. This formula dates from Mangools’ KD 2.0 update in September 2018.

What this means in practice:

  • Compare KD only within one tool. Mangools gives the same advice, since tools use different link data and formulas.
  • Treat KD as a link-based estimate. Neither score looks at content quality or how well a page matches the search intent.
  • Read the SERP before you decide. Both tools show the top results with their link metrics next to the score. If page one is full of thin or off-topic pages, the keyword may be easier than the number suggests.
Capability Ahrefs Mangools
Backlink analysis Site Explorer, on every paid plan LinkMiner: 100k, 500k or 1.2M rows/mo
Competitor research Site Explorer, plus Content Gap and Link Intersect tools KWFinder search by domain; SiteProfiler, 20 to 150 lookups per 24h
SERP analysis SERP overview and SERP history in Keywords Explorer SERPChecker, 100 to 1,200 lookups per 24h
Technical site audit Site Audit: 100k to 1.5M crawl credits/mo Not offered
Rank tracking 750 / 2,000 / 5,000 keywords, weekly 200 / 700 / 1,500 keywords, weekly; daily on Agency
AI search visibility Tracked AI prompts: 150 / 300 / 600 checks/mo; Brand Radar AI from $199/mo AI Search Watcher PRO, 500 prompts, every plan
API and MCP Lite and up, 100 to 500 rows per request Every plan

If your work includes backlink research, technical SEO or client reporting, this table decides it: Ahrefs covers those jobs and Mangools mostly doesn’t. Ahrefs also has a dedicated Content Gap tool for building a keyword gap list against competitors; with Mangools you’d run each competitor domain through KWFinder and compare the lists yourself. Our guide to competitor keyword research covers both the tool and the manual route.

If you mainly need keyword ideas, a SERP check and a simple rank tracker, Mangools covers that for less money.

Free Alternatives to Ahrefs and KWFinder

If you publish a few posts a month, you may not need either tool yet.

  • Mangools free account: 5 lookups per 24 hours, with 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup. No card required.
  • Ahrefs Free: Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify, plus Web Analytics, the SEO Toolbar and one AI Content Helper document a month. It doesn’t include Keywords Explorer, but Ahrefs also offers free single-purpose tools such as a keyword generator and a keyword difficulty checker.
  • Google Search Console: the queries your site already gets impressions for, with clicks and average position. It’s first-party data, so start here before paying for estimates.
  • Google Keyword Planner: estimated monthly searches and cost estimates for keywords, inside a Google Ads account. Google asks you to finish account setup, including billing details, before you can use it.
  • Skribra’s free keyword research tool: enter a seed keyword and get up to 50 related keywords with search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC and search intent across 8 countries, with no sign-up.

How to Choose Between Ahrefs and KWFinder, Step by Step

If you’re still undecided, work through four steps. The diagram sums them up, and the steps below explain each fork.

Decision tree for choosing between Ahrefs Lite, Ahrefs Standard, Mangools Basic, Mangools Premium and free tools based on needs and usage
Decision tree built from each vendor’s plan limits. Source: ahrefs.com/pricing, help.ahrefs.com, mangools.com/plans-and-pricing, October 2026.

Step 1: List the jobs beyond keyword research

Write down what you do every week. If backlink research, site audits, competitor traffic or client reports are on the list, you need Ahrefs (or another full suite), and the question becomes Lite or Standard. If the list is keyword ideas, difficulty checks and a rank tracker, Mangools covers it.

Step 2: Estimate your monthly usage

Count how many keyword searches you run on a typical working day, and how many keywords you want to track. On Mangools, size the plan to your busiest day, since lookups reset every 24 hours. On Ahrefs Lite, remember that filters and drill-downs use credits too; if 1,000 a month looks tight, Standard’s unlimited credits are the real alternative. Tracking more than 750 keywords also pushes you past Lite.

Step 3: Count the people who need access

Seats change the math more than list prices do. For a three-person team, Mangools Premium costs $81 a month with 3 extra seats included. Ahrefs Lite for three users costs $209 a month ($129 plus 2 users at $40), and Lite tops out there. Standard for three users costs $369 a month ($249 plus 2 users at $60). If you’re weighing paid suites against free tools for a team, our comparison of paid vs free SEO tools for agencies goes further.

Step 4: Check your price and test before committing

Open Mangools’ pricing page from your own location, since prices vary by region. Start with its free account, and if you upgrade, judge it quickly: the refund window is 48 hours. Ahrefs has no trial, so the cheapest test is a month of Starter at $29, keeping in mind its 200-credit limit, or Ahrefs Free on a site you own to see its backlink and audit data.

Ahrefs vs KWFinder: The Verdict

  • Choose KWFinder (Mangools Basic or Premium) if you’re a blogger, solo marketer or small business that mainly needs keyword ideas, difficulty scores, a SERP check and light rank tracking. You get more daily lookups per dollar, local data down to the city, and team seats on Premium.
  • Choose Ahrefs (Lite or Standard) if backlinks, competitor traffic, site audits or client reporting are part of the job, or you need its larger keyword database and metrics like Traffic Potential and Parent Topic.
  • Use both only if you need Ahrefs’ link and audit data and your writers need more daily keyword lookups than your Ahrefs credits allow.
  • Use neither yet if you publish a few posts a month. Google Search Console, Keyword Planner and free keyword tools cover the basics.

Prices and limits change often, so confirm them on ahrefs.com/pricing and mangools.com/plans-and-pricing before you buy. For how other popular tools compare, see our SEO tools review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is KWFinder part of Mangools?
Yes. KWFinder is the keyword research tool in the Mangools suite, and Mangools doesn't sell its tools separately. Every Mangools plan includes KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler and AI Search Watcher.
Is KWFinder accurate?
KWFinder's numbers are estimates, like every third-party keyword tool's. Mangools says it combines several data providers with its own processing, and that search volume usually lags about a month. Its keyword difficulty is based on Moz and Majestic link metrics, so compare it with Google Search Console data for keywords you already rank for.
Does Ahrefs have a free plan or free trial?
Ahrefs has no free trial and says it never runs discounts. It does offer Ahrefs Free, which gives limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access for websites you verify, but it doesn't include Keywords Explorer. The cheapest paid way into Keywords Explorer is the $29 Starter plan.
Is Ahrefs Keywords Explorer better than KWFinder?
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer has a much larger database (28.7 billion keywords versus 2.5 billion) and more metrics, including Traffic Potential, Parent Topic and, from the Standard plan, keyword clusters and intent labels. KWFinder gives more lookups per dollar and city-level location targeting. Which is better depends on whether you need the extra depth or the extra volume of searches.
Which is cheaper for a small team, Ahrefs or Mangools?
Mangools, by a wide margin. Mangools Premium costs $81 a month and includes 3 extra seats. Ahrefs Lite for three users costs $209 a month, and Standard for three users costs $369 a month, as of October 2026.
Can I get a refund from Ahrefs or Mangools?
Mangools offers a full refund within 48 hours of payment, though not for two consecutive subscriptions. Ahrefs generally doesn't issue refunds; on a monthly plan you can request one only if you haven't used the service, and Ahrefs may decline it if your account shows activity.
